My internet in Keswick comes over the 5G mobile network using a modem and specialist aerial in my loft. This is reliable enough for voice calls, TV including MotoGP in high def, plus general surfing. The Castlerigg transmitter mast is line-of-sight propagation except for trees, which have grown since I last checked things out.
In the loft with the specialist aerial I have been getting 2 to 3 bars. Taking the modem outside and with just the rabbit ears antenna I get 4 bars on the shed roof but only 3 bars on the garage roof, because of more trees obscuring the transmitter mast. As expected, the best outdoor location would be the chimney or at least the shed roof; shame as the garage roof is an easier place to work and the 5G antenna could replace the unused dish.
Having assessed the reception situations outdoors, I’ve moved the specialist antenna to a better location in the loft. It’s a plate design and heavily directional, which gives more signal. The move has given 3 to 6 dBm more signal and moved the overall score to 5 bars. Any remaining problems are probably contention as the tourists come and go.
