Ashness Bridge

Riding routes I avoid in the tourist season. It’s a leg-warmer to pedal up to the ever-popular Watendlath Bridge, passing over the lower Ashness Bridge. Plenty of flow in the beck making Lodore Falls roar, and a treat to visit almost alone. Even the road round the far side of Derwent Water under Catbells was quiet.

My Rockhopper hardtail was designed in California and looked at home resting against one of a pair of Western Redwoods in Portinscale before the final push to home in Keswick.
Great to be back riding my own bike after my recent rides on hired hardtails in La Réunion. Those days ended with a meal of swordfish at a beach restaurant; amazingly the Keswick fish counter was selling rod-caught Indian Ocean Swordfish. I happily bought a steak, grilled it at home in Cumbrian butter and served it with steamed vegetables. But not a glass of Réunion rhum, just fresh orange juice.
